Lathe II: Turning Mod!

Lathe II: Turning Mod!

$515.00

Wed 7-10pm, 6/14 to 6/28

Prerequisite: Lathe 101 or Turning Bowls class (or instructor permission with other equivalent experience)

In this 3-session class, you’ll use traditional turning techniques to create iconic “Mid-Century Modern” style objects. Choose from three different projects:

  • Candlesticks. The design inspiration comes from those developed by turner and designer Rude Osolnik in the late 1950s. Variation from his design is expected, even encouraged, but the basic shape gives an opportunity to practice flowing curves and getting a clean smooth surface with the tools.

  • Salt and pepper shakers. There’s plenty of inspiration out there, and Jens Quistgard, in particular, designed numerous variations in the 1950’s and 60’s that are now highly sought after and collectible. This project is also open to design variation, but there is some hardware involved (metal caps, plugs for the filling holes, etc.) and that will drive your design.

  • Tapered legs. If you are thinking of making a mid-Mod piece such as a credenza or cabinet you may have considered adding tapered legs to complete the look. Here we’ll learn how to make multiples of the same size leg and learn how to attach them to casework (tenons, threaded inserts, hanger bolts, etc.)
