Which class should you take?

tools and techniquesTools & Techniques classes get you up to speed on tool safety and operation, and basic woodworking techniques. Successful completion of these classes "certifies" you use Makeville's workshop for your own projects.

hands-onHands-on classes give you in-depth training on specific tools as you make a project to take home with you. Materials, tools, and basic designs are provided.

hands-onKnowledge classes provide you with essential design and technical background on a variety of topics in a compact, seminar/demonstration style format.

Workshop Certification
Want to bring your own projects to Makeville Studio? Take this class to get certified to use the tools in the workshop and rent studio time or become a member.
You will learn how to safely and effectively use the table saw, compound miter saw, router table, drill press, with an introduction to the band saw, planer and jointer. Basic techniques will be covered for each tool, including how to change bits and blades, how to use the various jigs and tables for more efficient and accurate work. Single 3-hr session.

intro to woodworking

Intro to Woodworking
February session: Sundays 4-7pm: 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26
In this class you will learn the basics of woodworking, safety, and tool use while being guided through a table construction by the instructor. Designed for beginners with little to no woodworking experience, the class covers wood physics, shop safety and etiquette, and the use of both hand tools and machinery. You will complete two projects in this class, a woodworking mallet and a pre-designed side table.
Completion of the course will give you the confidence and knowledge to work safely in the shop on your own projects and/or to move forward with more advanced woodworking classes.
All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided.

Getting Started in Furniture Making
March session: Tuesdays 7-10pm: 2/28 thru 4/3
This 6-session workshop takes you step by step through the typical furniture-making process: design, layout, cutting, joinery, assembly, glue-up and finishing. Working with machine and hand tools, you will build a solid hardwood bench with mortise and tenon joinery. Topics covered:

  • How to make a cut list and estimate materials and cost from a design
  • Milling rough lumber using the jointer, planer and table saw
     
  • Tips and techniques for jointing boards into panels
  • How to do quick, accurate mortise and tenon joints--multiple methods
  • Gluing and clamping the joints
     
  • Using a card scraper for post glue-up surface preparation
  • An introduction to simple hand rubbed oil finishes

Turning Bowls on the Lathe
Mon 1/23, 7-10pm
In this unique one-night intensive you'll turn a block of wood into a small wooden bowl while learning the principles of bowl turning, tool selection, and turning techniques. You will also learn how to select, prepare and mount a wood blank. All materials and safety equipment are provided.
Completion of this class allows you to rent open studio time to work on your own lathe projects. A complimentary 3-hr block of studio time is included with this class.

Wood Bending Workshop: Alvar Aalto Stool
Mondays 7-10pm: 2/6, 2/13, 2/27 and 3/5
In this four-night intensive you will gain an overview of wood bending techniques and learn how to make curved wooden forms using the bent lamination method, where multiple thin layers of wood are glued together and pressed onto a curved form with clamps or vacuum pressure. Our project will be Alvar Aalto's classic three-legged "Stool 60".
What we will cover:

  • Different methods for bending wood
  • How to design and build forms
  • Selection of bending materials and glues
  • Clamping and vacuum press methods
  • Wood bending design considerations
  • Hardware-based furniture joinery
     
Included with this class is a free pass for 12 hours of studio time (a $140 value) so you can work independently on your project between class sessions.

From Concept to Execution: Bringing project ideas to life
Ongoing
This advanced workshop takes you on a self-paced journey through the custom woodworking design+build process. You will learn how to:
- articulate ideas through concept sketches
- test designs with prototyping
- produce shop/detail drawings
- select and procure materials
- build and finish your design
With complete access to a wide range of tools and multiple instructors, you will learn how to safely and effectively use a variety of techniques and tools relevant to your project. Specific topics of instruction will vary with each project. Students are expected to present a project concept/idea at class start.
Class will meet weekly for progress review, q&a, design critique. An additional 40 hours of studio / workshop time (for individualized instruction and guidance) is included with this class, dates to be arranged with instructor per each student’s schedule.
